The effects of Alcohol and Drugs on your family in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, British Columbia by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Opiate addiction and recovery.

Alcohol and drugs can have a disastrous effect on families. In addition to the health risks that are involved, they can also result in numerous interpersonal and economic problems. In this article, we will be taking a look at what the implications are for a family.

Opiate addiction and drug abuse and addiction in Vancouver

In addition to having adverse effects on your health, alcohol and drugs can potentially erode your family also. We frequently hear about women being physically abused by their intoxicated husbands, or of families ending up in debt due to someone’s addiction. Every family has certain values that it is based on. However, drugs and alcohol can mentally cripple us and we might end up behaving in irresponsible and erratic ways. This not only creates an unhealthy atmosphere, but can also lead to the family breaking down.

Family System May Erode

As previously mentioned, a family isn’t just a group of individuals living and eating together. Essentially a family is about caring, respect, support and love. Those factors all contributing into making what can be described as the ‘ideal family.’ In order to create a family with a strong structure, it takes a great deal of sacrifice and compromise. However, alcohol and drugs impact our reasoning and judgment and prevent rational thinking at times. When you lack communication with your children and partner they can feel very depressed and alone. Your children might end up having traumatic childhoods which can impact their lives over the long-term. When a person is intoxicated, he may get into physical abuse and unnecessary arguments with his partner, and this can seriously damage the relationship.

Economic Impact

Being dependent on intoxicants uses up your finances. Rather than providing for important life issues, such as savings or child’s education, the person ends up squandering all of his money on his addiction. In addition, drugs and alcohol interfere with being able to be efficient at work, and can prevent the individual from advancing his professional career, or he could end up even being unemployed. That puts a great deal of pressure on other members of the family to sustain the family unit. In addition, abusers tend to steal money to help ease their cravings. That is something that can definitely cause rifts in a family. In addition, addicts are more likely to have different health problems, and the money that needs to be spent on hospitalization and treatment may have a significant impact on a family.

Health issues

Using drugs and alcohol can cause numerous diseases, including depression, high-blood pressure, strokes and cardiac arrest. If left untreated, it can result in death. Other family members can experience health problems as well. These are collectively referred to as ‘intoxication emotion.’ This problem is behavioral and can make family members feel social anxiety, shame and self-guilt. They might also suffer from insomnia and depression. An abuser’s children suffer the most, since they are denied love and care when they are in need of it the most. This can lead to them developing negative perceptions, which can cause them to be vulnerable to drug abuse as well as ambivalent.

Criminal activities

Addicts tend to be more vulnerable to indulging in criminal activities compared to other individuals. When an abuser doesn’t have money to purchase alcohol or drugs, he will easily indulge in violence, mugging, kidnapping and perhaps even murder in order to satisfy his cravings. In also interferes with the brain’s reasoning power and an addict has a higher risk for sexually abusing someone. Those activities can get the abuser put in jail. This can also great impact his family’s life.

The above are some of the effects that alcohol and drugs have on family life. There are fortunately different community centers sponsored by the state where drug abusers can get rehabilitated. It is very important for potential symptoms and signs to be detected early. That can help to prevent an abuser from spiraling downward. While in a rehabilitation program, it is very important to stay patient since there is no magical treatment for drug abuse. It is very important to realize that it will take time and that you can draw on family members for encouragement and support. Your family life can be spoiled by intoxicants, but it’s never too late for making a comeback.

Common Rehab Treatment Myths In Vancouver, BC – Options Okanagan Treatment Centers

Common drug and alcohol rehab treatment myths in Vancouver, Kelowna, Victoria and other parts of British Columbia by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Opiate addiction and recovery.

Maybe it’s the first time you look into rehab, or perhaps you have reached for other options without success. Regardless, it’s normal to fear what you don’t know. When you’re looking to enter rehab, do not let cold feed prevent you from making such an important decision which may cause a significant positive change in your life.

Opiate addiction and drug abuse and addiction in Vancouver

Approximately six million people decided to enter rehab in the year 2015. As you know more about this sort of treatment, you’re going to become more comfortable with the idea, and feel more confident taking the next step into fixing your life.

Debuking Rehabilitation-Related Lies

Rehab is frequently glamorized, and sometimes dissected in an obsessive manner in pop culture. However, a large number of individuals do not actually know much about what really goes on when one is treated for their addiction in real life. Let’s go through some common rumors, and establish the truth about them.

People Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

Treatment Is Not Only For Celebrities

TV may have you thinking that rehabilitation is more oriented to privileged reality stars, or former child actors. Movies such as 28 Days tend to show a version of the rehab experience which is glamorized and Hollywood-tinged, distorting the public opinion on it. Worse yet, celebrity gossip shows tend to utilize rehabilitation as a punchline to jokes about the stars’ addictions.

So much negative attention can make anyone squeamish. This is far from the truth, though, and treatment is accessible for everybody, without the scrutiny that the famous and the rich get.

Men Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

You Don’t Have To Reach Rock Bottom

Another myth is located at the opposite end of the spectrum – a group which is often known for doing rehab is those who are very bad off. Some believe that only those who are disowned by family, homeless and/or desperate in debt get treatment – only when they have drifted way too far off.

While those who have hit rock bottom do get rehab sometimes, even high-functioning addicts benefit greatly from treatment, and have done so many times. There’s no need to way until everything that matters to you is gone in order to make a positive move and look for a better future.

You’re Not Gonna Quit Cold Turkey

Nurses and practitioners who work in rehabilitation centers are very aware of the nuances of withdraw, and they’re trained to help an addict overcome this issue the best, most comfortable way they can.

In the most severe cases of abuse, you’ll likely go through a medically supervise detox which will help you stop without facing too harsh side effects. In order to ease withdrawal, they’ll utilize prescription drugs such as:

a) Anti-Depressants: Often prescribed for those who experience depression from withdrawal, they can be great to help you go through this experience, psychologically.

b) Naltrexone: The substance reduces the effect of opioids and alcohol, and also eases cravings for them.

c) Buprenorphine: A mild opioid, this medication has very limited potential for abuse, and helps reduce the pains associated from opioid withdrawal.

d) Methadone: This is a substance which has effects similar to Buprenorphine, but tends to be used on the more extreme cases of heroin and opioid addiction.

Regardless of how the rehabilitation and desintoxication process is done at your treatment facility, it is surely better to go through withdrawal under professional supervision instead of trying to quit all by yourself.

It’s Not At All Unaffordable

Indeed, some rehab centers – especially inpatient ones – are often pricey. There is, however, a wide variety of options to those who can’t pay for treatment. Lots of insurance plans cover treatment costs partially or fully, and many programs allow for reduced costs and payment plans according to your financial needs. Do not let money stand in your path to a better life.

Treatment Shouldn’t Be Intimidating

Most good rehab centers offer a balance between tough love and compassion. The medical team knows how difficult it can be to go through the process, and they’ll do your best to get through the initial recovery process and arm yourself for years in the future. Getting treatment is only the initial step, and recovery is a lifelong process.

Find Treatment

Regardless of how badly you’re struggling, how much money you have or where you live, there is certainly a treatment option which will work for you. It’s the perfect invest to make in your future and yourself – so allow us to help you taking the first step, right now.

Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome Information For Drug And Alcohol Addiction In Vancouver, BC

Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome information for Drug And Alcohol addiction in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna, British Columbia by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Drug And Alcohol addiction and recovery.

Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (more often referred to with the acronym PAWS) affects those that have refrained from drinking alcohol after having become used to abusing it on a regular basis. The syndrome seems very similar to depression on the surface. As you’d expect, there is a significant change in the mood of the individual while withdrawal is being experienced.

Opiate addiction and drug abuse and addiction in Vancouver

Those suffering from the syndrome experience a loss of happiness, mood swings, and a negatively altered circadian rhythm. It’s imperative that one can identify the signs of PAWS. Understanding potential treatments is also immensely important.

How To Recognize Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome

Along with former alcohol abusers, PAWS can also affect those that abused barbiturates and benzodiazepines. If you know someone who has recently sworn off this activity, you need to keep a watchful eye on them. Symptoms seem to be most noticeable around the four week mark, and that can last for up to an entire month. Impairment of general cognition can be greatly impaired during this period.

People Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

Extreme cravings to return to alcohol abuse is going to be one of the biggest symptoms. Anxiety and panic attacks are also increasingly common. Suicidal thoughts may also appear. Medical treatment should be sought out immediately for anyone experiencing any combination of these, as they can lead to truly destructive decision making.

What To Do When PAWS Occurs

Like any other issues that may arise in the wake of substance abuse and addiction, there are many treatments available for PAWS. Treatment at a facility that specializes in detox is generally the best option available. It might be best for abusers to seek this out before the worst of the symptoms begin. The symptoms come forth due to the brain trying to readjust now that it isn’t used to operating without any substances circulating throughout the system. The adjustment is incredibly gradual, and a staff of trained medical professionals may be the best qualified to help make that transition comfortable. Addiction and subsequent withdrawal must be faced head on, but it doesn’t have to be done alone.

Men Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

There are also some medications and behavioral therapy options that might prove useful for some people experiencing Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome. Healthy living and focusing on a positive outlook have proven useful in a lot of cases. It’s important to focus on the fact that the syndrome is only temporary. Having friends or family to form a support system for the person going through the withdrawals is incredibly important. Rehab facilities and programs are also in full supply. This is a case where every single avenue for treatment should be considered just to make sure the problem is dealt with in the most effective means possible.

Drug Rehabilitation Benefits In Vancouver, BC – Options Okanagan Treatment Centers

Drug Rehabilitation benefits in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria, British Columbia by Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Drug and Alcohol addiction and recovery.

Opiate addiction and drug abuse and addiction in Vancouver

For most people, the only way to overcome drug addiction is to seek professional drug treatment. Recovery is fostered by drug rehabilitation through offering those who have a drug addiction problem with the following benefits:

Personalized Treatment Plans: Physical exams, psychological assessments and diagnostic testing are performed by drug rehab programs to help ensure that patients receive drug treatment that is specially tailored for them. Adjustments are made to core therapies in order to work with specific chemical dependency durations, drugs of choice, personal histories and individual learning styles to ensure that recovery is successful.

Family and Group Therapy Sessions: Support, input and peer empathy are received by patients through participating in process groups and 12-step meetings. Since family relationships frequently suffer from and contribute to the substance abuse of a patient, a majority of drug treatment programs include family therapy sessions now as one of their core components.

People Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

Practical Life Skills Training: Practical life skills are also learned by patients to help them live sober lives in a productive, healthy and drug-free way. Organizational and time management instruction, stress and anger reduction skills and communication techniques are also learned by recovering drug addicts to help develop lifestyle foundations and coping techniques for their sobriety. In addition, patients are given on-site responsibilities, participate in fitness routines on a daily basis and learn nutritional guidelines in order to help develop healthy schedules, healthy habits and give their overall wellness a boost.

Individualized Therapy: Drug addiction’s psychological aspects gets addressed via one-on-one therapy session, whose purpose is to uncover the emotional reasons for an individual’s substance abuse. Secondary mental health conditions, negative belief system and low self-esteem are analyzed and addressed within the safe confines of personalized therapy, which enables addicts to better understand psychological factors which may have made contributions to their addiction and to learn to heal from them.

Men Living with Drug addiction in Vancouver

Transitional Planning: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that 40 to 60 percent of individuals who face drug addiction will end up relapsing. Transitional planning makes it possible for patients to work with addiction specialists to anticipate – and find solutions proactively for – possible drug use temptations following treatment. Assessments are made of interpersonal, career, social and environmental triggers, and patients are provided with referrals for 12-step groups, physicians and therapists to provide support and encouragement throughout the ongoing recovery process.

Aftercare Services: Most of the current best practices from the field of drug rehabilitation treatment include aftercare services, with the goal of following up patients even once they have graduated from a recovery program. Online or telephone support networks, alumni events and check-in calls all help alumni to continue with their recovery process after after they have relocated back to their homes. “Shadowing” or sober companionship services are even offered by some drug rehab programs for an additional fee. This enables recovering addicts to get one-on-one guidance and support as part of their new found sobriety.

Why W-18 And Fentanyl Are Here For Good In Vancouver, BC – Options Okanagan

Why W-18 And Fentanyl are here for good in Vancouver, Kelowna and Victoria, British Columbia – Options Okanagan Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating Opiate and Fentanyl addiction and recovery.

On a sunny morning in June on the Eastside of Vancouver’s Downtown, it only takes eight minutes to locate a fentanyl dealer.

One of these dealers, “Brad”, not his real name, said he has customers who look for fentanyl exclusively.

Opiate addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Vancouver

He sells patches of Ratio or Teva brand fentanyl for $30 up to $80. These patches are typically prescribed by doctors for relieving acute, chronic pain for cancer patients.

Another option that is available to addicts is that for $40 to $80 they can score a “point” (or 0.1 gram) of fentanyl powder, which is ready to be cooked and then injected.

“Brad” – who deals drugs so that he can support his own addiction – states that these days fentanyl is pretty much in everything that is sold on the street now.

But exactly how do Brad and other street dealers wind up with fentanyl, which is painkiller that has been designed for patients in pain and is potentially lethal?

People Living with Fentanyl addiction in Vancouver

The answer can be found rather quickly by looking up the distribution chain. The answer is: The Internet.

Fentanyl is openly sold Online.

According to a Vancouver, BC sergeant from the RCMP E-Division, it was 2014 when his synthetic drug operation got its first fentanyl reports.

The officer said that initially police were tasked with finding the source.

Men Living with Fentanyl addiction in Vancouver

Mounties found out that nearly all of the fentanyl was arriving from China in pure, powder form. After it was smuggled into Canada via large packages and parcels, it was cut or diluted for street use. The remainder of it is manufactured locally inside secret labs.

The RCMP reports that there is access to mainland China now that would never have been available 10 to 15 years ago, where people can go directly to the source.

When it comes to traditional heroin imports, there would be an individual in Canada do did all of the importing, along with a mediator, and someone inside the source country as well. However, the Internet takes care of all this and provides direct access without the need for all the middlemen.

In April, B.C. public health officials declared that drug deaths as a public emergency following the recording of 200 drug fatalities.

According to Lisa Lapointe, B.C. Chief Coroner, B.C. could potentially experience 750 drug deaths in 2016, if the current rate and trend continues.

She noted that it was hugely significant and added that the 308 drug deaths to date are more than the number of individuals who died last year in motor vehicle crashes, and that the total for 2016 may exceed a typical year’s number of suicides.

So far in 2016, B.C. has average 62 illicit drug deaths a month. January was the highest to date at 77, while in May there were 42.

Dr. Terry Lake, the Health Minister, stated that there is a tentative case to be optimistic that the surge experienced at the beginning of the year might have plateaued and could subside.

Dr. Lake stated that five new supervised drug consumption sites are being considered by Vancouver Coastal Health, and that Interior Health is considering them for Kamloops and Kelowna and Island Health for Victoria.

He also commended the new approach being taken by the federal government to harm reduction and marijuana policy.

Dr. Lake said there was evidence that the government was aware that they could reduce overdose death, and that other related harms and hospitalizations could be reduced, and that people could to be connected to services after the addicts were ready to accept assistance.

Dr. Lake also suggested that a number of the newly supervised sites might be clinical settings instead of like Vancouver’s existing Insite facility, but that it would be up to the health care professionals which model would be chosen.

The doctor said that any politician he had spoken to understands what a failure the so-called war on drugs has been and that different approaches need to be taken.

Also acknowledged by Dr. Lake was the fact that B.C. hasn’t been able to meet drug treatment bed demand. He stated that the government has continued to increase its investment in substance abuse treatment and mental health.

There is a new emerging concern, which is that the synthetic drug W-18 has arrived in B.C. In is much more potent than fentanyl is, and may cause death or overdose with much smaller doses.

Earlier this spring in Burnaby, police raided a fentanyl lab that had been making knock-off heroin. Tests showed traces of W-18 and investigator suspect it might have reached the streets.

Fentanyl is actually a prescription painkiller that many hospitals used. However Health Canada has never authorized W-18 for use.

Compared to fentanyl, W-18 is 100 times more powerful, which makes it a lot riskier for users, who often think they are taking Oxycontin or heroin, and more profitable for those operating drug labs.

According to Dr. Mark Tyndall, who is executive director for the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, so far, it has been quite difficult to identify W-18 in toxicology testing. He says there is no proof of it being responsible for any B.C. deaths yet.

Heroin has been an issue in British Columbia for quite a long time. In fact, according to recent data, there are a significant number of residents that claim they have used illegal drugs. The number tops that of the national average. As a frame of reference, in 2014, almost five million North Americans stated that they tried heroin at least one time. These numbers referred to individuals that were at least 12 years of age.

How do we get control of this problem? Outpatient programs can help. If you are having difficulty getting control of your heroin addiction, enrolling in an intensive program may help you to regain control of your life. In part, these programs help to establish healthy habits.

Patients in these programs learn about schedules and how to break habits that may eventually cause them to use drugs again. Administrators set up meetings that participants must go to. These meetings are scheduled and they help, in part, by changing the addict’s daily life. With heroin in particular, this is an essential component that leads to recovery.

The Role Of Evidence Based Techniques

“Evidenced based techniques” is a phrase that you are likely to hear if you enroll in a British Columbia outpatient program. In part, these techniques include things like peer group therapy. Getting people in the addict’s circle of friends and family involved in the program is also important. This is because these individuals are often essential to helping the addict change their habits in a positive way. It also helps the individual realize that they have a support system that they can turn to if things become difficult for them, particularly when they are not participating in the program.
