Treating Trauma, Process Addictions And Concurrent Disorders

At Options, our counselors are skilled and trained in trauma-informed practice. Most people who are addicted to drugs and/or alcohol have abused substances in order to cope with things like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), childhood and other traumas.

PTSD And Trauma & Prescription Drug Abuse or Addiction to Opiates

Many of our clients have been diagnosed with concurrent mental disorders. These can include anxiety disorder, depressive disorder, bi-polar disorder, and many others. As drug and alcohol addiction can "mimic" these types of disorders it is important that we treat the substance addiction first and foremost so the person can then receive an accurate psychiatric diagnosis.

We often find that when people are clean and sober for a period of time that their mental health symptoms, such as anxiety and depression go away or diminish greatly.

Along with drug and alcohol addiction, many of our clients have what are called "process addictions". These types of addictions can include shopping, gambling, working, food, sex and video gaming. Anything can become an addiction. At Options we treat the behaviors around these types of addictions in conjunction with treatment for drug and/or alcohol addiction in a compassionate and understanding way.

Embracing Tradition for Modern Healing: Sweat Lodge Therapy’s Role in Addiction Recovery for Prescription Drug Abuse or Addiction to Opiates

In the heart of Kelowna, British Columbia, Options Okanagan has tenderly woven a thread of ancient tradition into the tapestry of modern healing practices by introducing a new Sweat Lodge to their sanctuary of recovery. This heartfelt initiative is a reflection of their deep commitment to embracing the cultural wealth of healing arts. The compassionate team at Options Okanagan deeply empathizes with the emotional, spiritual, and physical battles faced by those journeying away from the grips of drug or alcohol addiction. They hold a sacred space for the profound transformation that the Sweat Lodge ceremony—steeped in spiritual significance—can catalyze.

The Sweat Lodge stands as a nurturing womb of Mother Earth, a place where one can strip away the weight of past struggles and immerse in the purity of introspection. Here, in the embrace of warmth and sacred chants, individuals are invited to release their burdens and find solace in the shared heartbeat of a community committed to healing. The counselors at Options Okanagan, with gentle understanding and respect for the multifaceted nature of addiction, have seen the powerful shifts that such a culturally rich practice can inspire. They believe wholeheartedly in the Sweat Lodge's capacity to forge profound connections—connections to self, to community, and to a life-affirming path forward.

This addition to Options Okanagan is not just an expansion of services; it is a beacon of hope, a hand extended in the darkest of times, offering a way back to wholeness and vitality. It is an invitation to stand together, to heal together, and to grow together, towards lasting sobriety and a renewed vision of life. This is the heart of Options Okanagan's mission: to journey alongside each individual with unwavering support, honoring every step towards a life reclaimed.

A&E Interventions : Season 17, Episode 7

A&E Intervention: Alex at Options Family Wellness Addiction Center

The only child of a single mother and world-class fiddle player, Alex was surrounded by music from birth. His mother married when Alex was five, but after a few years the marriage deteriorated and life became difficult at home. Friction with his stepfather left Alex increasingly isolated and he turned to the fiddle to try and gain acceptance. Alex’s skill developed and he had some early recognition, but living in his mother’s musical shadow was difficult and he began to compensate with alcohol as a young teenager. Just as Alex was beginning his professional career, his mother and stepfather divorced. The combination of his family’s dysfunction and life spent on the road soon turned his fondness for drink into a debilitating, fall-down addiction. Now in his mid-twenties, Alex’s career is at a standstill and his health is rapidly deteriorating. Without an intervention, he could lose his career, his family and his life.
