What Cocaine Is

The leaves of the coca plant are the source of the drug known as cocaine. Native to South America, it is a shrub that ranges from .5 to 4 meters in height. People who first take cocaine experience feelings of mental excitement and euphoria. As the effects of the drug wear off, they often become anxious, depressed, or fatigued. Since these feelings are not pleasurable, they turn to cocaine to relieve the symptoms and reenter a state of euphoria. However, the drug will never again deliver the same level of enjoyment that first time users experienced. The intensity levels are greatly reduced. While this happens with many other drugs, it is particularly notable in cocaine use. Over the long-term, cocaine users experience hallucinations, paranoia attacks, rising levels of violence, feelings that they are being persecuted, panic attacks, and other disorders of the nervous system.

Problems With Cocaine

Some experts believe that the psychological aspects of life become separated from the physical. These feelings of disconnection leave the user frozen by their drug use even though their mind is racing with many different observations and thoughts. For example, someone on cocaine may wish to stand up from their sitting position but be absolutely unable to do so. It’s also been reported that alcohol has little effect on someone under the influence of cocaine. It is not uncommon for a dual addiction of alcohol and cocaine use to be present. Many people who are addicted to both do so because of the lack of effect noted above. They wind up using both a depressant and a stimulant, which complicates their recovery.
