Why addiction persists
True addicts will continue to use drugs even if the activity may harm their work life, physical health, or close relationships. It is very likely that they can no longer imagine life without drugs or alcohol. You may subconsciously find that you are incapable of facing the challenges of everyday life. They feel like they have no chance of dealing with things unless their feelings are covered up by their drug of choice, so the cycle continues.
Many addicts quickly say they are too busy to take part in a treatment program. Family or work responsibilities are used as excuses to prevent them from fighting their addiction.
Because recovery can be elusive, there are addicts who point to previous failures as a reason to stop treatment. Many believe that typical treatment regimens are ineffective in their case. You may also fear the actual healing, detox, and recovery process. Anxiety dominates and does not prevent progress.
People who are addicted to drugs or alcohol often have a real need to be in control and are therefore resistant to the steps necessary for real recovery. They struggle to know when, where, and how to do something and are bad in following directions.
Another category of addicts are known to bury their heads in the sand and harbor hopes that the problem will go away on its own. They mistakenly believe that one day they will magically wake up to a life that does not require chemicals.
The bottom line is that addiction is not something that can be forced to go away. Failure to acknowledge the problem will be a permanent barrier to recovery. The public needs to remember that it is impossible to force an addict to recover. Recommendations for help, support, and healing are appropriate, but are ultimately up to the addict’s decision to seek and receive the help needed to defeat their demon once and for all. The truth is that those addicted to alcohol or drugs will almost certainly continue to lose their recovery if not recognized and understood.
