Once someone finds that they have fallen victim to drug addiction, they find themselves in an endless cycle of trying to overcome, relapsing and trying to recover in what seems like a never ending circle of failure. There is no doubt that addiction to prescription drugs is every bit as dangerous and serious as being addicted to illegal substances.
In most instances we find that the most common addiction to prescription medicine is to pain killers. It is not difficult to understand when we consider that the person who finds themselves addicted to pain killers got there because they had some surgery or injury that put them in great pain, but then little by little they found themselves dependent on the drug.
Addiction is a complicated issue and can come about due to more than one reason. The question becomes, why does one person get addicted and another does not. Addiction can be physical related addiction or a psychological condition. Very often it is a combination of these two issues. The addict may find they have panic attacks and elevated heart rates. In addition it is not uncommon for them to find their thinking is impaired. Commonly the addict becomes sleep deprived which furthers the cycle of depression and impairment of thinking clearly.
The cycle of ups and downs an addict experiences can lead to a cycling of these issues. They may be very sleepy for a couple of days and hardly able to get out of bed. Then for the next couple of days they may not be able to sleep at all. The exact symptoms and experiences will be different from addict to addict. It will depend in parts due to the particular drug they are addicted to and their physical and mental conditions.
It is not recommended that an addict try to overcome their addiction alone. Drugs have a powerful effect on the body and there are some serious considerations that should be advised on by their doctor. Before you try to detox it is highly recommended that you consult with a doctor who can guide you so that you do not make further complications. In some cases the doctor will prescribe a lower strength prescription to allow you to wean from the drug.
Anti-Depressants are an equally difficult addiction. Powerful anti-depressants are another of the complicated issues. Clinical depression is of course a serious condition in its own rights and should never be taking too lightly. Very often this condition requires the use of drugs. The key is how to balance this without compounding the problem with abusive addiction.
When the patient begins to crave ever increasing amounts of the drug, it clearly indicates that they have become addicted. Still, you should never change or drop your medication without consulting the doctor.
Addiction is something that should be dealt with by getting the help you need rather than trying to go it alone. A system of support that includes your doctor and a group that is familiar with your addiction will prove to be invaluable as you fight your way free of addiction.
