There is a complex relationship between addiction and substance abuse and stress-related problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). People with increased stress are more likely to try alcohol, opiates, or other drugs to avoid their stress. Stress causes adrenaline release and decreased production of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Medicines can stimulate dopamine, which makes a person happy. However, when the medicine is gone, a person may feel low because dopamine levels drop quite quickly.

This can cause withdrawal symptoms, increased anxiety, depression, irritability, and other mental problems, including insomnia. All of these problems can then make someone crave drugs even more. It is difficult to break the cycle of addiction once it has started. This means that someone struggling with drug addiction is likely to lose control of their drug use and enter into an unhealthy pattern.
Chronic stress, insomnia, and depression can all affect learning, memory, and impulses. If a person uses opiates or other drugs as a coping method for PTSD, anxiety, or stress, opiate or drug use itself can affect chemicals in the brain in a manner similar to stress, contributing to that addiction cycle and making it difficult to regulate use.
The problem is particularly serious for younger brains who are not fully developed and at a higher risk of developing PTSD. People who use drugs at a young age are more likely to fall victim to addiction problems later in life. There are genetics and epigenetics to drug and addiction problems. However, drug use and PTSD are comorbid and associated with mental disorders. There are psychiatric reports that contain research showing that genetic influences contribute to generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, major depression, and addiction.
The human brain is complex and has several genetic components and “brain binding” that can make a person more prone to developing PTSD when they are suffering from a stressful event. It is believed that some of these components may be similar to those that predispose an individual to alcohol or drug addiction. Chronic stress can increase a person’s risk of developing an addiction and increase the likelihood of relapse if the addiction is overcome earlier in life. The relationship between problems is complex.
