Relapse is preventable, and if it happens, it is something that can be recovered from. The recovering addict is at greatest risk during the first 60 to 90 days and after that still needs to be very attentive to their condition for the coming five years.
What Are The Common Causes Of Relapse?
Most patients leave a facility in high spirits. They feel better than they have in a long time and they are often confident about future prospects and living a life without abusing any substances. While it is healthy for them to feel so positive, once they resume daily living and all the issues that drove them to abuse their substance of choice, it can be a great challenge for them to resist the call of the substance to give them some relief. They have temptation all around them and no protection by staff that is always their watching to make sure they stay on track when inside a treatment residence.
If a patient is not vigilant in their recovery efforts, the motivation will wane and the call of their addiction will lead them down a path of relapse. It is not uncommon that recovering addicts forget the pain and agony of hitting bottom. They forget the desperation that drove them to seek treatment in the first place. This situation can easily lead to the addict allowing themselves to relapse. They may even convince themselves they are no longer addicted and doing the drug or alcohol again is not a problem.
Are There Coping Strategies That Help?
Coping is an essential part to lasting recovery. Many fail to learn the necessary coping skills that can allow them to handle things when they come, that would otherwise lead to temptation and relapse. Addicts are commonly addicts because they lack strong enough coping skills. That got them into addiction in the first place. So it is not difficult to understand that if they do not acquire these skills now, then relapse is a great likelihood.
