During the cocaine intervention, each person that’s involved will have some level of influence on the person struggling with substance abuse. However, it is important to note that not all loved ones will have leverage that empowers them to have some influence in the life of the addict. The addict’s spouse will obviously have a particular amount of leverage, as will his or her employer. Although leverage should ideally not be used as a threat, loved ones need to relate clearly what the consequences of failing to attend the drug treatment are likely to be.
At the end of the cocaine intervention, if the addict is still unwilling to attend a drug rehabilitation program, each individual presence needs to be clear about the actions that are to be taken should the person struggling with substance abuse refuse to attend treatment. Once the consequences of the refusal of treatment have been communicated clearly, if the addict is still unwilling to attend the drug treatment, loved ones need not give up; instead they need to seek the aid of a professional intervention specialist.
