Three recommendations were advised by the researchers to help keep teenagers and young kids from accessing opiates.
1) Proper disposal methods of unused opiate medications should be emphasized. Parents should be instructed on how to safely dispose of the unused opiates hence preventing the kids from accessing them.
2) Safely locking the opiates in cabinets hence inaccessible to kids and teenagers “Keep out of reach of children”
3) The dangers of opiates should be underlined and explained to parents and adults during prescription.
People behind the study noted the different actions of health practitioners and physicians in the implementation of the prevention strategies developed. They advised the adults on the effects of opiate abuse, how to safely dispose them, and where to store the prescribed drugs away from their children.
However, there was no practical evidence as to whether the above-mentioned strategies work or more research should be conducted.
All parties should come together to deal with this menace. Losing kids and teenagers to drug abuse is a very painful event that shouldn’t happen. When doctors, adults, social workers, and even the kids come together, this event can be avoided.
The government also has a role to play in this fight.
