Most public school corridors are lined with posters depicting the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The latest statistics from a recent survey, which focused on drug use and attitudes among 8th, 10th, and 12th graders in schools across the country, show the following stats.

In the 12th grade, 14.6 percent use illegal drugs, not including marijuana
These figures are lower than they were ten years ago. Given that many younger teenagers still use illegal drugs despite the many negative consequences, there still is a huge need for some drug intervention among these youths, and it is more important than ever.
Addiction and the teenage brain
Addiction is a very serious problem because of the constant changes in adolescence. According to medical health experts, the parts of the brain that regulate impulse control and decision-making are still developing even at the age of 25 years. This means that adolescents cannot make the right decisions based on long-term consequences in their life, but instead rather want immediate rewards.
Teenagers that abuse alcohol and drugs further damage this part of their brain, making them less likely to see the benefits of a sober lifestyle.
Addiction is like a freight train going full speed on the tracks, and the drug or alcohol intervention is the train’s braking system. In a system of conversations ranging from spontaneous to structured, the members of the family will work with the addicted teenager to clarify issues and help them stop the abuse before more damage is done.

If your family has a teenager who is battling addiction, they will deny their addiction and may not want any help or advice, just push everybody away. Teenagers who are just starting to experiment with alcohol and drugs, or teenagers who have good relationships with their parents and other family members, and who have not been ground down by drug or alcohol abuse, may be able to limit their drug usage with shorter conversations. Although this conversation may seem much more informal and improvised than a formal intervention. It is still important to plan this conversation by determining exactly what to say and how you will react if your teenager is angry, defensive, or both.
