A study conducted by a leading medical research center to show that adolescents tend to report various consequences of cannabis or using alcohol. Alcohol and cannabis are illegal for young adults and teens under a certain age. In Canada, marijuana is legal for medical and recreational purposes. In the United States the use of recreational cannabis is legal for adults over the age of 21 in 11 states.
However, cannabis and alcohol are the most popular types of psychoactive drugs among teens. A survey of 8,500 students found that 92 percent said they had used alcohol at least once, and 64 percent said they had used cannabis.
The researchers also asked students to report negative psychological effects from cannabis or alcohol consumption. The study found that marijuana and alcohol use were usually associated with various negative psycho-social consequences for adolescents.
Alcohol use in the context of regrets and dangerous driving
The researchers found that there was a close link between dangerous driving and alcohol consumption in adolescents. In the study, adolescents who frequently consumed alcohol were more than 17 times more likely to report dangerous driving than adolescents who did not report alcohol use. Marijuana users who are reported, they drive five times more dangerously than teens who do not consume marijuana.
Alcohol, compared to cannabis, is more likely to cause behavior that people later regret, according to the study’s teens. Drinkers in particular may have indicated that alcohol consumption leads to regretful behavior and difficulty in controlling emotions and delusions. Overall, there is a far stronger relationship between alcohol consumption and regret than between cannabis and regret.
Various relationships are influenced by cannabis use and alcohol consumption
The teens in this study also reported more frequently that the use of alcohol directly caused difficulties in their relationships with important people, friends and peers.
Marijuana use tends to damage peer-to-peer relationships. However, they are more likely to cause problems in their relationships with leaders, teachers, and others.
Cannabis consumption is associated with work and school struggles
Compared to alcohol, cannabis use is more related to loss of interest in extracurricular activities, work or educational interests. Marijuana users are more likely to report that they have less energy and difficulties with their work or school performance.
There is also a correlation with cannabis use and law enforcement issues. Teens who often use marijuana reported 20 percent more times having problems with the police than alcohol users. In research and surveys, they have been found that “ordinary” users have used cannabis more than 30 to 35 times. Marijuana users are more likely to report social stigma than alcohol users and see themselves as having a negative or bad influence, and/or dealing with people who have a bad or negative influence.
More undesirable outcomes for women, less for minorities
In general, women who are involved in marijuana or alcohol use are far more likely to report side effects than men. Students belonging to ethnic or racial groups are less likely to report negative consequences than other students than if they consumed alcohol.
