Despite the fact that we all agree with the prohibition of blood diamonds, we still allow the Sackler family to hide their crimes against humanity with a philanthropic guise.

Despite the fact that the Sackler family and notorious drug cartels both make their fortunes off the sale of highly addictive and dangerous drugs that have destroyed countless lives, the Sacklers are regarded as upstanding members of the community. There is also ample evidence that the fear of arrest and shame drives individuals to conceal their drug use in ways that increase the risk of a fatal overdose. This is because when a person uses drugs alone, no one can call 911 or perform CPR in the event of an overdose.

The most effective drug treatment is medically assisted treatment and is considered the gold standard for opioid-related disorders, but is underutilized. An opioid, Buprenorphine which has a “ceiling effect,” meaning it is not like heroin or morphine, does not have the intoxicating action, but rather quenches the thirst for opioids. Buprenorphine helps individuals deviate from uncontrolled drug use and reduce their physical cravings. Individuals with Buprenorphine prescriptions are often ready to work again, attend their therapy sessions, and regain some of the joy of everyday life.

However, the availability of buprenorphine varies widely depending on where a person lives, and people of color are consistently not prescribed this life-saving drug. Methadone has been used to treat opioid-related illnesses since the 1950s but remains difficult to access in the long term. Researchers point to the role of persistent stigma in the inadequate use of both drugs.

Better road ahead

Public medical health officials, activists who are in harm reduction, and citizens who are concerned about drug use in the United States and Canada are working to provide safer injection sites for individuals to take these drugs in the presence of medical trained personal. These sites help prevent fatal drug overdoses by providing an appropriate and timely medical response and paving the way for further medical care and treatment for addiction. In response to the strains in the hospitals from the covid-19 pandemic, the availability of methadone for homes has expanded and these changes have some physicians and medical treatment experts hopeful that they will become permanent.

The effectiveness, contents, and potency of the drugs are often unknown to drug users. Drug screening programs allow individuals to check the drug for fentanyl at their home using a test strip, and these programs have grown in popularity with government support. Many areas of the country continue to expand the access to naloxone, an easy-to-use nasal spray for overdoses. Individuals who are using drugs or have friends or relatives who are drug users are encouraged to learn about how to take or administer naloxone and nasal sprays.

The United States contains the world’s largest number of drug users and consistently also has the highest rates of opioid and cocaine addiction in the world. In the studied research, it was concluded that individuals often describe their drug use as a struggle or battle between their sobriety or dying from a drug overdose. But the heartbreaking wave of accidents, fatal overdose deaths tells a much more complicated story. Ignoring the evidence would definitely cost more lives.

The highly controversial Purdue Pharmaceuticals, Sackler Family agreement by Judge Drain on Sept. 1, 2021. The drug overdose epidemic, which has spanned more than two decades, has claimed more than 800,000 lives since the late 1990s. Current estimates suggest that approximately 2 to 3 million people just in the United States alone use heroin and 2 million people use over-the-counter pharmaceutical opioids.

Since 2010 while researching and writing about the overdose crisis for rehab treatment centers, and to understand its roots and consequences, and as a person in the drug rehab treatment world more and more funerals are being held for people who had Opioid addictions every year. What I have found is an increasingly dangerous drug environment for drug users with Fentanyl entering into the picture, often exacerbated by guidelines that are not based on research and attitudes that are detrimental to those who are affected.

How the ban feeds a dangerous market
Research shows that the illegal drug market will adapt to drug demand and law enforcement efforts.

One of the first consequences of increased demand for drugs is that these illegal drugs become cheaper over time, such as the prices for heroin and cocaine have been declining for decades. Political economists explain that this demand, combined with globalization, increases competition and efficiency, resulting in more and more illegal drugs are on the black market, which in turn lowers prices.

Secondly, drugs are getting stronger in response to drug bans. Stronger products in smaller packages are easier to transport and harder to detect by law enforcement efforts. The US overdose crisis has been an example of the devastating interaction between demand and prohibition.

In 1996, OxyContin was launched and marketed as a revolutionary intervention in medical pain management. Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer, deliberately downplays the potential for addiction, they produced a false claim that less than 1 percent will get addicted. As an opioid and central nervous system sedative, OxyContin has effects similar to morphine or heroin. Not surprisingly, research shows that the pattern of opioid prescribing from 1999 to 2008 is directly linked to an increase in overdose deaths.

As concerns about opioid overdose increased, prescribing practices were monitored. Purdue Pharma in 2010 replaced the original OxyContin pill with a new “abuse prevention” formula that made it more difficult for individuals to crush the pill and inhale the powder. As a result, many people who are addicted to OxyContin turn to heroin which is cheaper and easier to obtain. This has led to an increase in fatal heroin-related overdoses, often referred to as the second wave of the overdose crisis.

The growing heroin market paved the way for Fentanyl to enter the US illegal drug market. Fentanyl, a drug for severe pain, is 50 times more potent than heroin. In terms of shipping and traffic efficiency, fentanyl is easier to transport and sell than heroin. Fentanyl’s entry into the illegal drug market, especially when combined with heroin, has resulted in a doubling and tripling of overdose deaths between 2012 and 2013.

Since then, Fentanyl has polluted the supply of illegal drugs in the United States: it is often found not only in heroin, but also in cocaine, MDMA, known as ecstasy, methamphetamine, and counterfeit prescription pills. The result is that individuals who take these drugs do not know what are the contents or percentage mixtures or even if it’s real heroin they are using.

With the growing overdose crisis, the community of color, in particular, has seen an increase in fatal overdoses, and these deaths that are often preventable. And recently, disruptions to the COVID-19 supply chain have caused individuals to use up everything available, leading to an increase in drug overdoses.

The U.S. Justice Department filed in late September “a request for a stay” to block The Sackler’s bankruptcy plans granting them broad legal immunity to the pharmaceutical (BIG PHARMA) company Purdue Pharma, which is their drug OxyContin (Heroin) is at the center of the United States opioid epidemic.

William Harrington, the US trustee in the Justice Department, asked federal courts to suspend confirmation of the deal while the Department appeals the judge’s decision to approve the deal.

The Associated Press reported that David Sackler, one of the grandsons of the 3 brothers who started Purdue nearly 70 years ago, says Purdue Pharma will not give billions of dollars to legal arrangements unless they get Total Immunity From The Crimes they are charged with and all current and future lawsuits for company activities. The Bankruptcy Trustee of the US, nine states, and the District of Columbia have opposed the company’s proposed settlement because it would provide legal protection to members of the wealthy Sackler family, although none of them have filed for bankruptcy. It’s like Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, a Mexican drug lord and former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel says that it was the Sinaloa Cartel, not the “El Chapo Family” that was responsible for the deaths of 500,000 people in the States, millions of people addicted to OxyContin which is Heroin and the 70,000 people who died from Opioids in 2020 in the United States, which now is a New Record of people dying in this Opioid Epidemic. It is only going to get worse, there are millions of addicted suffers in the US right now, and they will eventually die from their Heroin addiction.

“We need a sufficient release (freedom from all crimes) to achieve our goals (to continue our crimes),” Sackler said in response to a question from an attorney for the United States bankruptcy trustee. “If the release fails to do that, we won’t support it.” Denying that they, the Sackler family have no legal responsibility for the drug epidemic since Purdue (which they own) marketed the opioids, Sackler said we have a moral responsibility to try to help and that’s the point of the agreement. It’s like Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán saying if you release me, I will spend some of my billions and try to help with your Drug, Opioid Epidemic.

Harrington stated the court had to grant his motion of suspension because the federal government “has a significant chance of succeeding in the appeal and because the harm that would result from the refusal of the stay outweighs the potential harm of the provision”.

The controversial deal was approved earlier in September by Judge Robert Drain, a federal judge in White Plains, New York. This could mean that the Sackler family, which owns Purdue Pharma, could be released of any future legal liability if they made a financial contribution of $4.3 billion from their own assets.

It’s like saying if Judge Drain releases El Chapo Guzmán, Joaquín (like Richard Sackler) promises to donate 4 or 5 billion dollars of his own fortune to help the people the Sinaloa Cartel killed with the Sinaloa Cartel’s heroin.

Harrington argued with the filing that the court of appeals ruled that the transaction deal had deprived those who had lawful lawsuits against the Sackler Family “without their knowledge and consent, adequate notice or even the opportunity to be heard”.

“The federal government’s case was also supported by previous Supreme Court rulings”, Harrington stated.

The US Justice Department filing is the latest in a long struggle and battle to get the Sackler family to admit their responsibility and be accountable for the manufacturing, marketing lies, and the selling of the drug OxyContin, a highly addictive and deadly painkiller.

Many medical experts claim that OxyContin helped the opioid addiction epidemic that killed more than 500,000 people across the United States and is still ravaging the country 20 years after the drug was first introduced. 70,000 US citizens dead from Opioids in 2020 alone. The number of people who died from Opioids (OXY) outside of the US is staggering also.

The FDA (approved OxyContin 1996?) also has a huge role in this deadly painkiller epidemic, FDA (Who, Why, and How) are just as guilty. (bribery). How does a deadly (HEROIN) drug get approved?

OxyContin made the Sackler family very rich, and withdrew $10.4 billion in the years 2008 thru 2017 from Purdue Pharma, and placed most of the funds offshore, knowing full well that they were in jeopardy of losing their fortune if left their money in the US. Sackler family members with their blood money bought 20 and 50 Million dollar Mansions with cash all over the US. What is the difference between blood diamonds, Guzman properties, or the evil Sackler blood fortune from OxyContin?

As more and more people died from opioid use, the plaintiffs sued Purdue. When the company filed for bankruptcy in September 2019, 2,900 lawsuits were known, of which more than 600 were named against the Sacklers. The bankruptcy proceedings put an end to these lawsuits. The Sackler family withdrew all the money from Purdue prior to 2019.

Judge Drain approved the settlement plan after careful negotiations between the family, local authorities, the hospital system, and others who have sued the company and are likely to be involved in costly litigation in the years to come.

Those who support the agreement, including most states and some plaintiffs, say it will provide much-needed funding for drug treatment programs.

Steve Miller, CEO of Purdue, said the agreement “ensures billions of dollars will be available to help people and communities affected by the opioid crisis.” Several members of the Sackler family said the resolution was an important step in addressing the public health crisis that they started.

However, critics say the term unfairly protects the Sacklers. It offers families the protection normally afforded to insolvent companies, but not to entrepreneurs who have not gone bankrupt themselves.

The US Justice Department and various states have appealed Drain’s decision.
