November, 2020 – Johnson & Johnson, US drug distributors McKesson Corp, Cardinal Health Inc, and AmerisourceBergen Corp, CVS Health and Walgreens, Walmart, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Purdue Pharma and The Sackler Family settling Opioid/OxyContin Crisis lawsuits over 52 Billion in remediation payments and for damages related to the opioid crisis.

The retailers CVS and Walgreens have tentatively agreed to pay a combined total of $10 billion to settle lawsuits brought by states and local governments. These lawsuits allege that the retailers mishandled prescriptions of opioid painkillers.

Walmart has also reportedly tentatively agreed to pay $3 billion to settle a similar lawsuit. According to Bloomberg, the agreement would not be finalized until enough states, counties, and cities agree to the terms.

CVS Health has stated that, should a settlement be reached, it would pay the states a sum of approximately $5 billion over the course of 10 years, beginning in 2023. Walgreens Boots Alliance has said it would also pay around $5 billion in remediation payments over a period of 15 years.

“We believe this is in the best interest of the company and our stakeholders at this time, and allows our pharmacists, dedicated healthcare professionals who live and work in the communities they serve, to continue playing a critical role in providing education and resources to help combat opioid misuse and abuse,” Walgreens said.

CVS also said it is looking to curb opioid abuse.

As National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is observed in the United States, individuals who began using opioids during childhood share their stories in an effort to educate children and parents about the dangers of drug abuse. More than 3,000 lawsuits have been filed against opioid manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies by US states, cities and counties, accusing them of downplaying the addiction risk and failing to stop pills from being diverted for illegal use.

More than 500,000 overdose deaths over the past two decades can be blamed on the opioid crisis in the United States. In 2021 alone, more than 80,000 people died from an overdose involving opioids.

According to government data, an estimated 9.5 million Americans age 12 and older reported misusing opioids in 2020, including 9.3 million prescription pain reliever abusers and 902,000 heroin users.

Meanwhile, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl caused nearly two-thirds of the more than 100,000 drug overdoses in the 12-month period ending April 2021, an increase of 49% from the year before, according to the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

Opioid drugs are designed to mimic the pain-reducing effects of opium. This class of drugs includes prescription painkillers like morphine, oxycodone and hydrocodone, as well as illegal drugs like heroin and illicitly-produced fentanyl.

People who become dependent on opioids may experience withdrawal symptoms when they discontinue use. Dependence is often coupled with tolerance, meaning users need to take increasingly larger doses for the same effect.

March 2022, Purdue Pharma has agreed to a settlement with a group of states that will see the Sackler family pay out up to $6 billion to states, individual claimants and opioid crisis abatem. The settlement comes after Purdue Pharma’s OxyContin painkiller has been widely blamed for kickstarting the opioid crisis.

Johnson & Johnson, who owned large opium farms in Tasmania and the three largest US drug distributors – McKesson Corp, Cardinal Health Inc, and AmerisourceBergen Corp finalized a $26 billion nationwide opioid settlement in February.

The highly controversial Purdue Pharmaceuticals, Sackler Family agreement by Judge Drain on Sept. 1, 2021. The drug overdose epidemic, which has spanned more than two decades, has claimed more than 800,000 lives since the late 1990s. Current estimates suggest that approximately 2 to 3 million people just in the United States alone use heroin and 2 million people use over-the-counter pharmaceutical opioids.

Since 2010 while researching and writing about the overdose crisis for rehab treatment centers, and to understand its roots and consequences, and as a person in the drug rehab treatment world more and more funerals are being held for people who had Opioid addictions every year. What I have found is an increasingly dangerous drug environment for drug users with Fentanyl entering into the picture, often exacerbated by guidelines that are not based on research and attitudes that are detrimental to those who are affected.

How the ban feeds a dangerous market
Research shows that the illegal drug market will adapt to drug demand and law enforcement efforts.

One of the first consequences of increased demand for drugs is that these illegal drugs become cheaper over time, such as the prices for heroin and cocaine have been declining for decades. Political economists explain that this demand, combined with globalization, increases competition and efficiency, resulting in more and more illegal drugs are on the black market, which in turn lowers prices.

Secondly, drugs are getting stronger in response to drug bans. Stronger products in smaller packages are easier to transport and harder to detect by law enforcement efforts. The US overdose crisis has been an example of the devastating interaction between demand and prohibition.

In 1996, OxyContin was launched and marketed as a revolutionary intervention in medical pain management. Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer, deliberately downplays the potential for addiction, they produced a false claim that less than 1 percent will get addicted. As an opioid and central nervous system sedative, OxyContin has effects similar to morphine or heroin. Not surprisingly, research shows that the pattern of opioid prescribing from 1999 to 2008 is directly linked to an increase in overdose deaths.

As concerns about opioid overdose increased, prescribing practices were monitored. Purdue Pharma in 2010 replaced the original OxyContin pill with a new “abuse prevention” formula that made it more difficult for individuals to crush the pill and inhale the powder. As a result, many people who are addicted to OxyContin turn to heroin which is cheaper and easier to obtain. This has led to an increase in fatal heroin-related overdoses, often referred to as the second wave of the overdose crisis.

The growing heroin market paved the way for Fentanyl to enter the US illegal drug market. Fentanyl, a drug for severe pain, is 50 times more potent than heroin. In terms of shipping and traffic efficiency, fentanyl is easier to transport and sell than heroin. Fentanyl’s entry into the illegal drug market, especially when combined with heroin, has resulted in a doubling and tripling of overdose deaths between 2012 and 2013.

Since then, Fentanyl has polluted the supply of illegal drugs in the United States: it is often found not only in heroin, but also in cocaine, MDMA, known as ecstasy, methamphetamine, and counterfeit prescription pills. The result is that individuals who take these drugs do not know what are the contents or percentage mixtures or even if it’s real heroin they are using.

With the growing overdose crisis, the community of color, in particular, has seen an increase in fatal overdoses, and these deaths that are often preventable. And recently, disruptions to the COVID-19 supply chain have caused individuals to use up everything available, leading to an increase in drug overdoses.

Drug addictions triggers are the situations, events or feelings that cause people in recovery to lose their focus on remaining sober and clean and relapse back to their drug of choice. For instance, seeing another person using their drug of choice or arguing with a loved one can be considered triggers, and are the reason why so many people have relapsed.

There are lots of potential events or situations that can trigger a relapse, and the best way to address these problems is to distill them down to the emotional base they incite in you and finding a way to deal with the associated emotions. Some of the most common emotional triggers include criticism, envy, jealousy, a sense of lack of control, and rejection.

Jealousy, Envy, and Drug Addiction Relapse

The feeling of jealousy is often incited when someone feels like something that belongs to them is being taken from them like a partner, reputation, a job, etc. Envy is when someone believes that another person got what they deserved like a promotion, money, or position. These feelings are all about justice. What is yours, is yours! Most people who are envious believe that they deserve to have the object of their desire and those who have it don’t deserve it. Such people may even wish those that have what they want ill. These feelings can severely hamper your recovery progress.

Criticism and Drug Addiction Relapse

Whether it is coming from those who are trying to help you get better at something, or from an internal source, or from those who’d tear you down, criticism can be tough to stomach, especially during recovery, which is a period most people are still vulnerable. Many respond with defense or anger while others respond by becoming depressed or thinking they aren’t worth anything. Ultimately, feeling lesser or judged because of the perceived perception of others could lead to relapse.

Rejection and Drug Addiction Relapse

No one likes hearing the word no, especially in situations where they’ve lowered themselves to a position of vulnerability and asked for something. Romantic rejection, peer rejection and rejection due to abandonment by a parent(s) are all painful and could make you feel very insecure during recovery. The uneasiness of rejection could make you think about relapsing.

Perceived Lack of Control and Drug Addiction Relapse

We all need to feel that we in control of our lives. However, a lot of people in recovery tend to confuse being in control of their lives and controlling other people’s lives. Just because someone does not want to do something you want them to do, that does not mean that you don’t have control over your life. If someone asks you to do a thing that you do not want to do, that does not mean they are trying to control you. The struggle of perceived control can be consuming and may cause problems that may lead to a relapse.
