Alcohol consumption by teens affects their mental and physical condition, and a human’s brain continues to develop until the age of 30 years. Therefore, alcohol can damage the brains of adolescents who consume alcohol with harmful effects, especially if alcohol consumption is too high. If not acted on early, the results would be that the teenager would suffer from permanent brain damage. Therefore, parents and the community should turn to alcohol rehabilitation programs to get help for these young people and their addiction issues.

Sometimes interventions are required and the measures needed for adult drug users are different from those for adolescents. Teenagers don’t think and act like adults, and how they react is very different. They tend to have their own language. In addition, they have different life priorities. Therefore, choosing to ignore these facts when trying to help a teenager with alcohol problems is the wrong approach and leads to poor results.

What you need to know about teen alcohol addiction treatment

Treatment that groups adolescents with their peers has been very useful in most alcohol rehabilitation programs for adolescents. This works mainly because these young people tend to be very concerned with the thoughts and opinions of their peers and same age friends. Creating situations where they feel responsible for the same peer group often produces beneficial results which sometimes makes it a more effective method than individual consultation.

Alcohol rehabilitation programs must also understand the problems affecting adolescents and identify the root causes of alcohol dependence. Life examples like a parents divorce or separation, boyfriend or girlfriend separation, or even losing employment can have an emotional impact that forces a teenager to feel really comfortable with using alcohol as a coping drug. The shift to alcohol is more or less a way to avoid the reality of the problems they face. Many adolescent alcohol counselors are aware of such problems and can identify and overcome them when a teenager is involved in a alcohol rehabilitation program.

How a alcohol rehabilitation program can help teens

These alcohol rehab programs are designed to help teenagers with alcoholism or teens who abuse alcohol to treat their problems. Also, these programs will be able to overcome various concurrent problems that are specific to adolescents and may be related to alcohol abuse. For example, alcoholism among teenagers can cause eating disorders, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor health. Teenage girls are at risk of experiencing an early pregnancy or becoming a victim of sexual harassment. The addiction counselors can identify these problems when the teen is in the right rehab facility to ensure they get the proper attention. A team of researchers recently noted that there are several essential steps that doctors and adults must take to help in the prevention of allowing teenagers to receive opiate drugs.

In many cases, grownups (parents) who have legitimate prescriptions tend to be the main source of teenagers receiving opiates. To help teenagers from accessing prescription opiate drugs, researchers have studied 5 various institutions to study the measures physicians and adults can take. To halt teenagers from getting their hands on these dangerous opiates, researchers have concluded with a variety of different approaches.

Prescription Opiates

Both natural and synthetic opiate medications use the general compound that is found in the poppy plant. Each of these compounds are unique from one another. Even though there are many differences, when these opioids reach the bloodstream they have the ability to create a number of different effects. They can create a feeling of euphoria in the pleasure center of the brain, a reduction in the baseline of cell communication that is commonly found in the spinal cord and the ability to lower the brain’s ability to receive and respond to levels of pain in the body.

While these medications are essential in relieving a number of physical ailments they will not go away even after the use of other prescriptions and other types of pain. Sadly, two of the most common outcomes of the misdirection and usage of these prescription drugs is a fatal overdose or prolonged addiction. In Canada and the United States alone there are currently millions of individuals addicted to opiates. On a daily basis, there are an estimated 140 deaths in Canada and The United States due to opiate addiction.

The Following Strategies Can Be Used To Prevent Teenager Access To Opiates

It is important that grownups understand their role and behavior when dealing with addiction and well as encouraging the use of opiates on younger kids and teenagers. It is important to realize that the large majority of children and teenagers will be able to find or use opiates through their parents and will use their parents or guardians as the main source for opiates, it is at this stage that an opiate addiction can begin.

In order to limit the availability of opiates to young children and teenagers, researchers have shown these recommendations. It is absolutely essential that parents and guardians who use prescription opiates in a home with children and teenagers that they are not left unattended by any means. This simply means that all opiates should be under lock and key at all times. Opiates must be supervised and kept locked at all times to prevent improper usage.

Physicians and health practitioners have a great impact in the ability of helping to implement the proper strategies that are needed to assist with prevention strategies. In order to come up with the best strategies to help prevent children and teenagers gaining access to opiates, researchers have noted that the absence of practical evidence is essential in the strategies that have been mentioned as well as the need for additional research in the matters.

It is through this process that rehabilitation and recovery can begin. Once children and teenagers are denied the ability to gain access to opiates through parents and guardians can the chains be broken and the healing process can begin.

Teenager Drug Addiction in Alberta & BC

Drug addiction is serious at any age but is particularly problematic for teens. On a physical level, drugs impact teenagers differently than adults. People who use drugs during their adolescence are also more likely to struggle with sobriety later in life.

Drugs are being introduced to today’s children earlier than ever, with up to 37% of kids having tried drugs by the time they reach 8th grade. The addiction rate among teens is somewhere around 22%, which is far higher than it should be.

Teenage life is far from easy, putting kids in this age group at a higher risk of developing a drug addiction. Teens often struggle with issues like anxiety, poor self-worth, feelings of being out of control, or difficulty expressing their emotions. Problems like these increase the likelihood of teens turning to drugs. Unfortunately, what starts as casual drug use often leads to addiction.

Drugs provide relief by lessening any pain that teens are feeling on either an emotional or physical level. They alter the way that they view the world, keeping them from feeling as lonely or hopeless. Being high dulls their emotions, offering a reprieve from pain.

If you have a teenager, it is important to watch for signs of addiction. Several signs that could indicate a problem include:

  • Unexplained behavioral changes
  • Eyes that looked glazed-over or dull
  • Always feeling tired
  • Poor academic performance
  • Telling lies or taking items that don’t belong to them
  • Isolating themselves from their friends or giving up activities that they once enjoyed

If you think your teen may be addicted to drugs, there are some important steps to take.

Start by listening to your gut. If you suspect something is wrong, you probably are correct.

Discuss your concerns with your teenager, choosing a time and place where they feel safe and supported. Remain honest and open throughout the conversation, really listening to what they say. Try not to judge. Instead, try to see things from their perspective to get a better sense of how they are feeling.

Teenage Drug Rehab and Interventions in Alberta and BC

Use this opportunity to let your teenager know how their addiction makes you feel. You most likely are scared for them, concerned about their well-being and their future. Approach this conversation in a non-judgmental way. Otherwise, your teen probably won’t listen to what you have to say. If you have any experience with drugs or if you have observed others using them in the past, talk about it with your teen. While approaching a subject like this is uncomfortable, it can help your teen feel more connected, making it more likely that they will listen.

When you love someone and are extremely close to them, it is often difficult to acknowledge that they have a problem with drugs. This is one situation, however, where you can’t turn a blind eye. You need to act quickly to ensure that they get help. You may have to try to reach them multiple times before you connect. Once you do, however, you can help your teenager get on the path to recovery.

Drug Addiction Treatment in Alberta & BC

Addiction takes such a toll on the mind. Because it has a hold on those that are addicted, the idea of recovering from addiction might seem far fetched. Those that have an addiction to a specific substance rely on it so much that it has completely taken over their lives, causing them to do things they never thought they would do in life while tearing them away from their loved ones. It is hard for addicts to imagine themselves living sober lives because they feel like they cannot live without having the drugs in their system. While it is a challenge to overcome an addiction, there are many people who have successfully beat the odds.

If you want to get on the right path, you need to first admit that you have a serious problem. You should create a list of all the different ways your drug usage has negatively impacted your life. For example, relationships with some of your family members may be strained, you might have lost your job, and you may no longer have any money because you spent every single cent from your savings account. Upon making such a serious realization, you can start taking the proper steps to become a sober and healthy individual. Ask your loved ones to support you on this journey as you hope to overcome your addiction for good.

Teens and people Living with Drug addiction and Addiction Aftercare and Continuing Care in Fort McMurray, Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta

Remain honest with your loved ones and with yourself. You can listen to your loved ones tell you about the way that your drug addiction has impacted their lives, too. When you realize how much damage has been done, you might yearn for better things in life simply because you want to go back to a time where you were not destroying your life with drugs. Having a support system is important when you are trying to kick such a bad habit because your support system will be there for you all the time.

While some addicts attempt to get clean on their own, others choose to go to a rehab center for treatment. The best way to improve your chances of having success is to go to a rehabilitation center where you can receive medical guidance and support during your recovery. You would also have countless opportunities to speak with counselors about everything.

Teenager Drug Rehab in Alberta & BC

Drug addiction is a real issue and it is particularly troublesome when teenagers are affected by using drugs or alcohol. These days, children are being exposed to drugs earlier than ever. Sometimes this is because there is usage within their own family environment.

With drugs and alcohol being as accessible as they are, it can be difficult to prevent teenagers from becoming addicts.

Marijuana and alcohol are the most popular drug choices for teenagers, but heroin and methamphetamine are as well. In many cases, teens use drugs to avoid all of the issues they are dealing with in their daily lives. They look at being under the influence as an escape, even if it is only temporary. Teenagers believe that even the smallest problem is the worst thing in the world, so they are more likely to use drugs than adults. While drug use starts as an escape, eventually they find themselves in the throes of addiction.

If you suspect a teenager in your family is addicted to drugs, the main thing to keep in mind is the fact that honest communication is the key to getting them some help. Anger may be the first emotion you feel, but displaying this may make them retreat and they are not likely to digest anything you are saying.

Stay calm and take the time to sit down and have a deep conversation about addiction and how it can affect a teen’s life. Discuss the physical issues, like heart problems, paranoia, lethargy and sleep disturbances. Show them before and after pictures of people who have had their lives turned upside down after becoming addicted to drugs. Information like this is readily available. A simple Web search can uncover some resources.

Educate yourself thoroughly about drug use and addiction. Present this information to the teen in a way they can relate to. Focus on seeing things from their point of view. Encourage them to share their thoughts and the reason they were initially drawn to drugs.

The next step should be seeking some kind of counseling for your teen. Get in touch with your local mental health facilities to see what type of services they have available. It can be really helpful to teens if they can talk to others in their age group. Try to find peer counselors and therapy sessions in the area. Considering starting one yourself in the event none are available.

Why Alcoholism is a Form of Drug Addiction :: Teen Alcohol Addiction In Alberta and BC :: Options Okanagan

Why is alcoholism a form of drug addiction? Teen drug alcohol addiction in Calgary and Edmonton, Alberta & British Columbia : Alcohol and Drug Addictions – Options Treatment Center in Kelowna, British Columbia treating drug opiate, fentanyl, heroin and alcohol addiction and addiction recovery programs.

Teenage Alcohol Addiction in Alberta & BC

Most individuals do not consider alcohol a drug, chiefly because it is legal to drink as long as you are not under the age of 18 in Canada and 21 in the United States and 18 in other countries. However, if you take a closer look at alcoholism, it is just as severe and dangerous as any other form of drug addiction. Due to the fact that alcohol is legal to drink, most individuals just take it as any other beverage and without knowing it, end up having a drinking problem.

Drug addiction can be defined as having an uncontrollable craving for a substance. With addiction, you feel that you need to take that substance in order to be normal or in a state where you can function properly. Well, alcoholism is defined in the same manner. When you are addicted to alcohol, you can not see your life without it. The presence of alcohol has become mandatory that you’re not willing to give it up without a fight. The truth is that people who crave for alcohol on a regular basis are drug addicts.

The problem of alcoholism is that it makes you believe that you cannot function or live without the buzz that alcohol provides. As a matter of fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified alcohol as a drug and so, an individual with a drinking problem can be referred to as a drug addict.

The good news, however, is that there’s help for individuals suffering from alcoholism. Alcoholics Anonymous is one of the most prominent organizations that help individuals with a drinking problem. As the name suggests, it’s a private group that meets a few times a week and centers on the steps to recovery. Making it through these steps leads to complete recovery from the addiction, even if it’s usually a struggle to stay sober.

Individuals who are addicted to substances like heroin, cocaine, opiates and the like have withdrawal symptoms, and that is no different from alcoholics. The far-reaching effects of this form of addiction can stay with you for years and this makes the similarities between the two quite evident.

When you decide to look for help, it is imperative to acknowledge the fact that you are really suffering from an addiction to alcohol, similar to any other drug and once you face the fact, then you’ve started the journey to recovery.

Teenagers and Prescription Drug Addiction

Researchers from Universities in both Canada and America found that it is fairly common for teens, who visit the emergency room, to have a history of prescription drug abuse. In fact, the study found that over 15% of these teenagers who needed to go to the ER had abused prescription painkillers or sedatives in the last year.

Prescription drug abuse has been a major concern throughout all of North America. But what may be more startling is the high use of prescription drug abuse by teenagers. In these studies, researchers wanted to research how many of the teens who left the ER were had abused prescription drugs in the past. They also wanted to see if teens visited the ER in hopes of being prescribed high powered painkillers or sedatives.

Teen Rehab & Intervention, Opiates, Heroin addiction and Fentanyl abuse and addiction in Calgary, Alberta Teenagers

It is a fact that those who need emergency care are usually patients who have very little money and are low income. This is because these patients are most likely not covered by primary insurance. While it is true that some patients in the emergency room do need emergency medical help, most people are seeking care because they feel that this is their only option. It has been proven that low income people have a higher risk of abusing substances like prescription drugs.

Teens Have Easy Access to Prescription Drugs

Of the 2,900 teens that were surveyed, researchers found that a staggering 9.8 percent of them had abused prescription painkillers such as hydrocodone, oxycontin, and methadone. Researchers also discovered that 6.8 percent of these young adults had abused sedatives like Xanax, Valium, or Ativan.

This research study also confirmed that most of these teenagers who had abused prescription drugs did not have a prescription for what they had abused. In fact, the research showed that only 18.5 percent of the teenagers who abused prescription painkillers were ever prescribed the medication. And what’s worse, only 11.5 percent of the teenagers who abused sedatives ever had a prescription.

Teenagers Living with Opiate Fentanyl and Heroin addiction in Calgary, Alberta

This study confirms that it is easy for teenagers to find prescription drugs. It became increasingly easy to find these prescription after the year 1996. This was when the FDA approved OxyContin. OxyContin was created by The Sackler Family of Purdue Pharmaceuticals. At this time, doctors began prescribing this drug to more effectively treat their patients with chronic pain. However, now it seems that this drug was overprescribed and is partially responsible for the opioid epidemic.

Teens Who Are at Higher Risk

It is important to note that the study found some teens would visit the emergency room because of their prescription drug abuse. The Addiction Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that prescription drug overdoses have increased dramatically in the last 10 years. Studies have shown that teens who use prescription drugs without a prescription are far more likely to abuse them and other substances. Research has also shown that these teenagers who abuse prescription drugs are more likely to drink and drive and to also allow themselves to be a passenger of a drunk driver.

If a teen gets prescriptions for painkillers and sedatives from the emergency room it makes them even more vulnerable to abuse.

It is true that the chance of addiction is relatively small if these drugs are taken in accordance to doctor’s orders, some people believe doctors are not concerned enough about the potential of their patients to abuse the drugs. Many call for more caution on the part of doctors prescribing addictive medication.

Addiction can be a really complex thing, and there’s a good reason it is still frequently studied. Friendship matters a lot. Especially as a youth. While this sounds relatively simple or basic, understanding how deeply that’s true makes a difference. This goes before the high school years, as well. Friendships from all the way back to middle school can have a very strong influence on whether or not a teenager ends up becoming addicted or falling into the trap of substance abuse.

When it comes to serious decisions teenagers fall to peer pressure quite easily and that means that there is some strong evidence from research showing that friends are heavily influential when it comes to the decision of whether or not to use drugs.

Many times a friendship grows because people have similar interests. This makes sense, but many people don’t think about the fact that these similar interests also tend to keep friends together. This can end up very much feeding itself as a circle since friends stay together because they have the same interests but since they’re already friends when one person in that group picks up a habit, chances are all the others will too.

It is incredibly rare and unlikely that teenage friendships stay strong when the people have very different interests. If one really gets into drugs, chances (according to research) are pretty high that the rest will get to that point, as well.

This study was a joint one involving three different universities and the results came back consistently: friendships matter. This goes for those who end up using drugs, those who become heavily addicted, and those who aren’t addicted at all. The friends will almost always reflect the habits of the individual when it comes to drugs and alcohol.

So What Are The Influencing Factors?

While there are always some potential for outside influences that affect the individual, the focus on peer relations have joined many past studies to bring together a wealth of information.

Some of the main points to keep in mind:

  • Drug using peers are one of the single biggest risk factors when it comes to teen addiction & substance abuse
  • Various “good behavior” activities seem to discourage use while other “bad behavior” activities open the door
  • The more support from drug using friends, the more likely the teen will use
  • Levels of family dysfunction can directly affect the chances of drug use
  • So can anxiety, depression, and lack of social acceptance

While this can sound like a cliched message from an after school special, the old bit of advice to parents is true: knowing who their children are friends with and spending time with is hugely important. Seeing the danger signs early will help parents know if they should be worried, and understanding the level of influence friends have both good and bad makes a huge difference.

Being involved with a child’s friends will give the parents several advantages, such as:

  • Being able to understand potential exposure level to their own children
  • Seeing which friendships are good and which ones are risky/potentially troubling
  • Building a stronger relationship with a child is never a bad thing for a parent
  • If issues arise a parent can react sooner for treatment in the early phases when it’s most important

Different Drugs with Different Consequences

A survey was conducted by a leading medical research center that shows that teenagers have a tendency to report various sets of consequences for marijuana use and alcohol use. Both alcohol and marijuana are illegal for young adults and teenagers who are under a specific age. In Canada, cannabis is legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes. Use of recreational marijuana is legal is just 10 US states.

However, marijuana and alcohol are the most popular types of psychoactive (hallucinatory) drugs by far among teenagers. A survey was done on 8,000 high school students that found that 93 percent reported that they have had consumed alcohol once at least, and 65 percent reported one incident at least of marijuana use.

Also, the researchers asked the high school participants to report the negative psychological consequences that they have experienced based on using marijuana or alcohol. It was revealed by the survey that use of marijuana and alcohol tended to be associated with different adverse psychosocial outcomes sets for teens.

Alcohol Linked To Regret And Unsafe Driving

It was found by researchers that there was a strong association between unsafe driving and teenage drinking. In the study, the teenagers who reported to drink frequently were more than 15 times likely to report driving unsafely than teenagers reporting no history of drinking. Frequent users of marijuana were three times more likely to report driving unsafely than the teenagers who don’t use marijuana.

Alcohol, compared to marijuana, were more likely to result in behavior that they regretted later, according to teenagers participating in the survey. In particular, female drinkers were likely to state that drinking alcohol led to behavior they regretted, and difficulties with controlling their emotions and muddled thinking. Overall, there was a lot stronger associated between using alcohol frequently and regret compared to use of marijuana frequently and regret.

Different Relationships That Are Affected By Marijuana Use And Drinking

Also, teenagers in this survey were more likely to report drinking alcohol directly led to difficulties with their relationships with significant others, friends, and peers.

Using marijuana was less likely to harm the relationships of teenagers with their peers. However, it was more likely to cause problems with their relationships with supervisors, teachers, and other authority figures.

Use Of Marijuana Is Associated With Struggles In Work And School

Compared with using alcohol, the use of marijuana was more likely to be related to loss of interest in extracurricular activities, work, or interest in school. It was more likely for marijuana users to report having less energy and struggles with performing at work or at school.

Also, there was an association with using marijuana and problems with law enforcement. Teens who used marijuana frequently were 25 times more likely to report having difficulties with the police compared to alcohol users. A “frequent” user, for the purpose of the study, was defined as having used marijuana over 35 times. Users of marijuana were more likely to report that they faced social stigma compared to alcohol users, and viewed as a bad influence or as somebody who is involved with people who are bad influences.

Understanding Addiction: Help For Parents Who Think Their Children May Struggle With Substance Abuse

It is certainly hard being a parent to a child of any age. There are always challenges that you are going to go through during your child’s life. However, the situation quickly becomes even more of a challenge when you have a child who is addicted to certain substances. While more research has gone into addiction and the primary causes of it, there are still a lot of questions on why certain people have a greater chance of becoming addicted to substances. When you have a child that is struggling with addiction, you should do your best to be there for him or her, offering support when it is needed while working together to help fight the disease.

Understanding Addiction

When a person uses certain substances, it changes their brain chemistry. It makes it hard for them to put a stop to using, whether they are drinking alcohol or taking drugs. It is known for being a disease that leads to serious problems when it continues to go untreated for too long. The addiction can have such a negative impact on an individual’s thought process, preventing them from making good decisions while causing them to crave the substances they are using even more than ever before.

As more research has been performed, addiction has finally been recognized as a disease. It is often compared to other diseases that can weaken your system and have a negative effect on the brain. The brain often becomes rewired when a person becomes dependent on different substances. Simply using a substance one time could quickly lead to an addiction that sends a person in a downward spiral.

How It All Begins

In most of the addiction cases, the addicted person started to use a substance on their own. They may have felt pressured into doing so or may have decided to use a substance as a coping mechanism due to the trauma they have dealt with in their lives. After using one time and experiencing the high that comes along with taking drugs or drinking alcohol, the person may start to become dependent on what they are using and that is where the addiction truly begins. There are a few different risk factors associated with addiction, including genetics and the environment in which a person is raised in.

People who have been through traumatic situations have a greater chance of struggling with addiction because they are looking for different ways to cope with their mental and emotional pain. People with mental health conditions also have a greater risk of suffering from a serious addiction. Some of the mental health conditions include post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. When a person deals with a rough upbringing that may involve abuse, conflict, neglect, and struggle, they tend to have an even greater chance of becoming addicted to drugs.

How to Identify Substance Abuse

If you believe your child may be addicted to certain substances, you need to know a bit more information on the signs of addiction to certain things, such as alcohol or opioids. Your child may seem detached, may no longer have an appetite, and might even begin acting differently. You may notice that your child is stealing, getting into more trouble, and neglecting his or her appearance over time. When you start to see the signs that something is wrong, you should not put any doubt in your mind. Instead, you should speak to your child and work on getting professional help for him or her.
